Choosing the best security system for your home involves doing some research into the home security companies in your area. While they all serve the same basic purpose, you may find some that have good reviews online, or hear about a particular company that has worked with somebody you know in the past. When you are searching for a home security company, you will want to keep these three things in order to find that one that is best for you:


  • Customer Service
  • Reputation
  • Price

Why customer service is so important.

If you live in an area with a few different home security companies, you may want to turn to the one that has the best customer service. A security company that has good customer service will respond within a day to your residence for a maintenance call, since from time to time the electrical components will wear out and need replacing. Responding quickly to a service call means that you will not have to be without your security system for very long, and you do not have to worry about servicing the components yourself in the case of DIY security systems.

A security system company that has great customer service will also be able to make honest recommendations to you regarding what they think is best for your house, while still working within the budget you have for it, and the technical constraints associated with your property. It is hard to downplay the importance of customer service in home security companies because so much can depend on the willingness to engage current customers in a timely manner.

How reputation plays a role in which company to choose.

The reputation of  a home security company can make them seem very attractive to homeowners, or drive away potential customers. It is important to try to figure out what other people think of the company you may want to do business with, especially those who have their security systems now, or have had them in the past. Working with a security company that has a good reputation and positive word of mouth buzz will probably work out well for you as it has for so many other people. Likewise, it would be smart to stay away from companies that appear to have a bad reputation since they may not do as good of a job, or have a poor customer service track record.

The role that pricing plays in determining which company to pick.

In general, many of the home security companies in your area should have prices that are relatively close to each other. This is because the people who run those companies know that if they price themselves too high, customers will go to one of several other security companies nearby. Be sure to ask about "free systems" that national companies advertise and remember - nothing's free.

The main way that price should affect your home security system is in how expansive you want it to be. Setting a budget that you do not go over will help you to determine what kind of a setup you can get at a certain price point from any company. Always be sure to include both installation fees (if there are any), and monthly fees when determining how much you want to spend.  

Last, beware of companies who charge a fee for an initial consultation.  Some companies ask for a credit card before asking about your security needs.  Look for a local company that provides free estimates.  A professional on site will be able to properly design a system for you and go over your options before you hand over any money.
